For those of you in the Los Angeles area, you may want to check out an upcoming lecture at the Central Library.

On Thursday, June 8, 2017 at the Mark Taper Auditorium, the library is presenting “Siege at Fort Anthony,” about a 1964 eminent domain battle stemming from the “ill fated” Hollywood Museum, a vanity project of “motion picture industry heavyweights headed by Sol Lesser, Gregory Peck, Mary Pickford and Walt Disney, decided to create a museum showcasing the history of movies, radio and television to be located across the street from the Hollywood Bowl.”

Save the date: the William & Mary Law School’s Brigham-Kanner Property Rights Project has selected University of Hawaii Law Professor David L. Callies as the 2017 recipient of the Brigham-Kanner Property Rights Prize.

The Project has also announced the dates for the B-K Conference:

When: October 10-13, 2017

Where: William & Mary Law School, Williamsburg, Virginia

The 2016 Conference was held in The Hague, Netherlands, and in 2017, and as you can see, we’ll be returning to Williamsburg.  

The Conference starts with the traditional candlelight dinner and presentation of the Prize in the historic Wren Building, and the following day is a series of discussions about the prizewinner’s work, current issues in property law, and, naturally, property rights. The speakers and attendees are legal scholars and practicing lawyers, and there is also a large contingent of law students of course.

Continue Reading Professor David Callies To Be Awarded Brigham-Kanner Prize At Property Rights Conference (Oct. 10-13, 2017), William & Mary Law School

This year, the University of Hawaii Law Review is devoting one of its issues to a symposium on issues related to the sharing economy. 

On Friday, February 17, 2017, the law review is sponsoring a series of presentations from 9:00 am – 4:30 pm at the law school (lunch included if you RSVP ahead of time), followed by a reception in downtown Honolulu.

Presenters include national experts such as Professor Stephen Miller (who is also the founding Chair of the ABA State and Local Government Law Section’s Sharing Economy Committee), Christina Sandefur of the Goldwater Institute, local players such as Michael Formby, the Director of Transportation Services for the City and County of Honolulu and Greg Kugle of my law firm, and industry insiders such as Timothy Burr Jr., Senior Public Policy Manager for Lyft.

When we previewed the 2017 ALI-CLE Eminent Domain & Land Valuation Litigation Conference while we were getting buried in the snow a couple of weeks ago, we promised there would be better weather in San Diego than much of the country was then experiencing. As you can see, we delivered.

We — and by “we” I mean the faculty, the ALI-CLE staff, and the record number of attendees who came to San Diego — also delivered on a really great conference. See our posts on several of the presentations here, here, here, and here for a flavor.

Our final day was anchored, as usual, by Pacific Legal Foundation’s Jim Burling, and property rights guru and advocate Michael Berger. Jim was his usual riveting self, and Michael supplied the insight to cases which only he can.

In case you are wondering, the above is the view from the dais, and no, I didn’t bring a Spam calendar with me, it was a gift from a thoughtful New Jersey colleague who knows that Hawaii people love Spam. I will reserve comment on whether I love Spam, and simply say thank you for the calendar. 

We finished the day strong with the National Forum, where audience members took the mic and shared their cases, issues, and results with the rest of us.
