and two tugs rendering honors. Ford Island in the background.

“Sacrifice,” “courage,” and “service” were words repeated many times today at the ceremony to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. I was fortunate enough to be invited to attend, to bear witness in person. While this post isn’t related to the topics I usually blog about (except in a most tangential way — we filed a brief on behalf of several retired admirals in a Supreme Court environmental case a couple of years ago that referenced the December 7 attack*), this was a milestone event, so I thought a short report might be of interest to readers; we will return to regularly scheduled programming tomorrow.

Those who live or who grew up in Hawaii are perhaps reminded of the attack more than others. Many of us had

U. Hawaii Law School alums – comes this devastating news from Dean Avi Soifer:

Dear Members of the William S. Richardson School of Law Community;

I have the awful task of informing you that Professor Jon Van Dyke passed away earlier today while at a conference in Australia.

I am personally so very sorry to have to give you this news.

Jon was admired, loved, and vitally important throughout a remarkable number of different circles of people stretching far beyond our Law School, but we were particularly and truly blessed to have the direct benefit of his many years of inspirational teaching and scholarship, remarkable public service, and deep and abiding friendship.

There is and will be no other like him.

Jon apparently died in his sleep and we are awaiting further details about memorial arrangements.

Tomorrow we will gather for an All School Memorial during what would have been

A note to our Mainland colleagues: when next you are called to Hawaii on business, if you emulate His Georgeness, you can’t go wrong.

In our Bishop Street Fashion Guide, we commented upon the unwritten rules for the unique haberdashery in Honolulu, and what is considered appropriate business wear for lawyers when not appearing in court.

In that vein, the recent showing of The Descendants featuring Geo. Clooney at the Hawaii International Film Festival is an example of how to play it right down the center: a reverse print, button-down, half-placket, no-poly aloha shirt, most likely of the Reyn Spooner variety. Tucked in for the formal look, or untucked for the casual Friday look or pau hana time.

However the film is otherwise in the accuracy department, we can say this: the technical advisor and the wardrobe department got it 100% right. Clooney dresses like a Hawaii businessman.Continue Reading Clooney Sports The Aloha Shirt…Like A Boss!

        No, it’s not another land use blog as you can tell from the title.

        But it is another blog by a law firm colleague, one of the best in the immigration and naturalization business, David McCauley.

        David joins the other Damon Key bloggers, Mark Murakami (hawaiioceanlaw.com), Tred Eyerly (insurancelawhawaii.com), and Rebecca Copeland (Record on Appeal).

        Pretty soon, we’ll have the entire firm blogging. Check it out here. Continue Reading New Blog To Follow: Hawaii Immigration Lawyer
